  • Track 1 Deep Modalities (Friday/Saturday/Sunday)
Develop your clinical skills and practical knowledge. Focus on evidence-based clinical review and practical applications across the lifespan for neurological, rehabilitation and orthopedic patients using therapeutic ultrasound, TNS, and FES.   This is an excellent comprehensive, hands-on, lab based 15 hour class, taught over 2 days. Each lab session has equipment in the therapist’s hands.   Practical applications are reviewed and practiced for each individual modality. The course is designed to assist the therapist in integrating information regarding the use of modalities appropriately when treating their patients. The expectation is to “learn it today”, then “practice it tomorrow”.    Theoretical concepts will be presented within a framework of the biologic principles and evidence based clinical applications for the modalities reviewed in class.  At the completion of the class, participants will be able to appropriately select parameters for using US to enhance treatment. Review and application of TNS and FES, including parameter selections for stroke, neuro rehab vs. orthopedic rehab, chronic pain, and muscle strengthening will be addressed for both adults and pediatric populations.  Case studies provide real-life patient problems and treatment solutions. Come prepared to share your difficult patient situations and engage in group problem solving.   Hands-on lab course provides TNS and FES units for each two participants; Ultrasound is practiced in groups of 4 therapists. Participants will benefit from prior exposure and knowledge of anatomy. As an additional benefit, they may choose to review and/or bring textbooks on anatomy and/or modalities. Real life patient questions are welcomed and addressed.  Program subject to change. Participants are cautioned to apply new information and skills within the scope of state licensure law.  Board of Occupational Therapy Practice has the following requirements to be licensed to use sound or electrical physical agent modalities.  Licensee must successfully complete and provide to the board documentation of: (a) 20 hour instrucation or training in sound physical agent modality devices; (b) 20 hours of instrucation or training in electrical physical agent modality devices; and (c) either: (1) certification by the Hand Certification Commission, Inc.; or (2) the successful completion of ten proctored treatments consisting of: 5 proctored treatment under the direct supervision of a licensed medical practitioner in sound physical agent modality devices; 5 proctored treatments under the direct supervision of licensed medial practitioner in electrical physical agent modality devices.  Application needs to be submitted with the proper fee for Sound and Electrical PAM = $35.00.  Please refer to the Board of Occupational Therapy Practice for full details.  Click on Regulations tab on the top; then follow links on left of Board of Occupational Therapy Practice site: administrative rules 24.165.513 pertains to Sound and Electrical Physical Agent Modalities.
